Differences between mounting system solar cable and normal cable selection

Feb 22, 2023

Solar technology is set to become one of the green energy technologies of the future. Solar energy or photovoltaic (PV) is becoming more and more widely used in China, and in addition to the rapid development of government-backed PV power plants, private investors are actively building plants with plans to put into production solar modules for global distribution.

mounting system solar cable is a device for the transmission of electrical energy or signals, usually consisting of several wires or groups of wires.

A conductor made of one or more mutually insulated conductors and an outer protective insulation layer, which transmits electricity or information from one place to another.

mounting system solar cables

Usually a rope-like cable consisting of several conductors or groups of conductors (at least two in each group) twisted together, each group being insulated from each other and often twisted around a central one, the whole being covered with a highly insulating covering. Cables have the characteristic of being internally energised and externally insulated.

Cables are power cables, control cables, compensation cables, shielded cables, high temperature cables, computer cables, signal cables, coaxial cables, fire resistant cables, marine cables, mining cables, aluminium cables and many more. They are all made up of single or multi-stranded wires and insulation and are used to connect circuits, appliances, etc.

The cables can be divided into DC cables and AC cables according to the system of the photovoltaic power plant, and are classified according to their use and the different environments in which they are used as follows.

1. DC cables

(1) Series cables between modules and their components.

(2) Parallel cables between the strings and between the strings to the DC distribution box (sink).

(3) Cables between the DC distribution box and the inverter.

The above cables are DC cables, which are more often laid outdoors and need to be moisture-proof, sun-proof, cold-proof, heat-proof, UV-proof and, in some special environments, acid- and alkali-resistant chemicals.

2. AC cables

(1) Connection cable from the inverter to the step-up transformer.

(2) Connection cable from the step-up transformer to the distribution unit.

(3) Connection cable from the distribution unit to the grid or to the consumer.

This part of the cable is AC load cable, indoor environment laying more, can be selected in accordance with the general power cable selection requirements.

The difference between photovoltaic cables and ordinary cables

Photovoltaic cables.

Conductor: copper conductor or tinned copper conductor

Insulation: irradiated cross-linked polyolefin insulation

Sheath: irradiated cross-linked polyolefin insulation

Ordinary cables.

Conductor: copper conductor or tinned copper conductor

Insulation: polyvinyl chloride or cross-linked polyethylene insulation

Sheathing: PVC sheathing

As can be seen from the above, the conductors used in ordinary cables are the same as those used in photovoltaic cables.

The insulation and sheathing of ordinary cables are different from those of photovoltaic cables.

Ordinary cables are only suitable for laying in ordinary environments.

Advantages of photovoltaic power cables: high temperature resistance, cold resistance, oil resistance, acid and alkali salt resistance, UV protection, flame retardant, environmentally friendly, photovoltaic power cables are mainly used in harsher climates and have a service life of 25 years or more.
